空间这个概念有着相对和绝对的两重性,一个空间的大小、形状被其围护物和其自身应具有的功能形式所决定,同时该空间也决定着围护物的形式。“有形”的围物使“无形”的空间成为有形,离开了围护物,空间就成为概念中的“空间”,不可被形象感知;“无形”的空间赋予“有形”的围护物以实际的意义,没有空间的存在,那围护物也就失去了存在的价值。”

在北京展厅设计中我们所说的空间是四维的,在此给通常意义上的三维空间加上“时间”这一概念。时间意味着运动,抛开时间研究空间将是乏味的,没有意义的。自爱因斯坦“相对论”提出以后,人们对空间的认识有了深化,知道了空间和时间是一个东西的不同表达方式。空间是可见实体要素限定下所形成的不可见的虚体与感觉它的人之间所产生的视觉的“场”,是源于生命的主观感觉。而这种感受是和时间紧密联系在一起的,人们在展示环境中对展品的观赏,必然是一种动态的观赏,时间就是动态的诠释方式。人在展示空间中,就必然体验时间的流逝和空间的变化,从而构成完整的感观体验。空间的时间性在展厅设计中是客观存在的一个因素,充分运用时间这“第四维”是创造动态空间形式的根本,也是创造“流动之美”的必经之路。

在展示环境中,空间具有流动性是必然的,是由展示空间的功能特点决定的。展示空间是一门空间与场地规划的艺术,是在特定的空间范围内用一定的设计表现手段向人们传达信息、展现空间中的展示内容,它使人们犹如置身于一个巨大的艺术雕刻中,用各种艺术陈列手法的动态表现,规划上有意识的引导,使观众人们在三维空间中体验时空产生的第四维空间效应。
